The Architect’s Legacy

The original building was designed by José Marques da Silva (1869–1947), one of the most influential architects in the history of Porto and a central figure in the development of Portuguese architecture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Educated at the Porto Academy of Fine Arts and later at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Marques da Silva developed a refined architectural language that combined classical composition with the functional requirements of a modern and rapidly evolving city.

His work left a lasting mark on Porto’s urban landscape through landmark projects such as São Bento Railway Station, the Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War, and several distinguished civic, residential, and commercial buildings.

The building on Avenida dos Aliados reflects his commitment to architectural quality, urban dignity, and timeless design, standing as part of a legacy that continues to define Porto’s architectural identity to this day.
